Why use an ePortfolio?

Writer: BlogBlog

Within the last couple of years my district attempted an engaged learning model which included student centered/project based learning. Our goal was to direct students learning with a driving question while allowing them to research and guide themselves within a group setting. While learning soft skills of working in groups we noticed self paced learning was difficult to motivate our lower level students. These groups were to choose where they'd like to be on a learning rubric and follow instructions accordingly. Within this engaged learning model I found similarities to COVA in the event of creating and critiquing a final product. I found in comparison to the engaged learning model that COVA allows assignments to be unique to the students creativity yet their learning was still measurable and attainable. In relation to our ePorfolio I find value in having an end product which in this case is digital and capable of being edited for updates, and more importantly having a storage vault for all critical ideas based off of education. I like the fact that I can use this portfolio in terms of showcasing and managing relative ideas to any career. For me personally, I think 5303 benefits us in terms of being able to focus on making connections and having time allocated for editing, critiquing and reviewing value in our creations. I find in my own teaching that as I practice these models with my 6th graders I'm seeing an increase in reflection and ownership of their learning at all levels. At one point our goal was to have each student graduate with and a digital portfolio but this idea would take years of prep work in getting  started and finding the correct network to store it. I do love the concept of having proof of ones learning.
